About the project
The Brooklyn-based Orbits Trio is a collective specializing in contemporary improvised music steeped in the jazz tradition. Its members include pianist Grant Richards, bassist John Sims, and drummer Roberto Giaquinto, frequent collaborators who have developed a tight sound and cohesive dynamic through their time playing together.
Featuring a wide variety of mostly original compositions, their debut album will showcase an extensive body of new repertoire exploring the concept of coaction, the process of two or more things or people working together, especially to have an effect or achieve something.
In particular, the trio is interested in the coaction of emotions and the idea that many profound human experiences exist at the intersection of two or more powerful feelings, for example hope and heartbreak, joy and unity, or empathy and sorrow.
For this project, the trio has expanded the instrumentation with woodwinds and strings on select pieces, creating dynamism through new tonal palettes and textures while exploring technical aspects including odd meters, variable forms, tempo changes, and collective improv.
In March 2025, thanks partly to support from the esteemed Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation, Orbits Trio recorded their highly anticipated debut offering at Samurai Hotel Recording Studio with master engineer David Stoller at the helm. Augmented by the remarkable artistry of Julieta Eugenio on tenor saxophone, Alex Hargreaves on violin, and Agustin Uriburu on cello, “Orbits Trio+3” will make their first artistic statement in 2026 with their debut album and join the exciting dialogue of current NYC music.
